MAMMOTH & MASTODON

Information on the Woolly Mammoth, Mastodon, and Stegodon.

Woolly Mammoths, Mastodons, and Stegodons, all now extinct, were huge elephant like animals having a long nose and tusks. Mastodons have their beginnings in the Miocene Age and lived until the end of the last ice age. Stegodon is a primitive elephant that has its origins in the late Miocene of Asia. It is the ancestor of mammoths and modern elephants. The more recent Mammoths had their start in the Pleistocene Age and also suffered extinction at the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago. One of the major differences between the animals is the teeth. Mammoth teeth have a very flat grinding surface while the mastodons and stegodons teeth surfaces have blunt crests. The difference in teeth morphology is evidence that the these animals had separate types of diet. The mammoth, having a broad flat grinding surface, would have eaten mostly grasses and the leaves of low shrubs The mastodons and stegodons, whose teeth were capable of grinding coarse vegetation, would have eaten a much wider variety of plant species.
