Glyptodons were giant armadillo like mammals that thrived throughout
South America, Central America, and southern North America. They
were grazing animals covered with a bony "shell" made up of polygonal plates
called skutes. This shell was used as defense against predators and
the animal is sometimes thought of as the mammalian equivalent of the armored
Ankylosaurus dinosaur. Some species could reach the size of a small
automobile.
